DGKTS Awards 2020 – Prof. Dr. Lado Kralj for Lifetime Achievement

We congratulate the awardees of the Slovenian Society of Theatre Critics and Theatrologists (DGKTS): literary and theatre theorist, university professor, playwright, editor and translator Prof. Dr. Lado Kralj for the Vladimir Kralj Lifetime Achievement Award and Rok Vevar, publicist, critic, historian and archivist, for the Vladimir Kralj Award for critical and theatrological achievements for the period 2018 and 2019.

Vladimir Kralj Lifetime Achievement Award to Prof. Dr. Lado Kralj

As a thoroughbred theater man par excellence, he Prof. Dr. Lado Kralj developed numerous forms of work related to theatre. The experience of his postgraduate stay in the centre of the spiritually flexible performing avant-garde in New York in the early 1970s determined a series of stages in his activity: he co-founded EG Glej, as well as the Pekarna Theatre, which he spiritually and aesthetically directed, for a short time he was the artistic director of the Drama of the SNG Ljubljana, and later he was significantly involved in the operation of theatre festivals in Yugoslavia and Slovenia. In the course of transitions between practice and theory, he lectured on the history of drama and its theory for two decades at the Department of Comparative Literature and Literary Theory at the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana, formed a sense for the historical avant-gardes of the twentieth century in young intellectuals and, among other things, led a seminar on theatre criticism. In addition to his literary work, Lado Kralj is also a master of selected, dense formulations in his scientific and research work, always working on a specific micro-level, which is crucial and so very rare. With his literary-historical and literary-theoretical research, included in numerous scientific articles and publications, he laid the foundations of drama theory.

Vladimir Kralj Award for Achievements in the Field of Theatre Criticism and Theatrology for the Period 2018–2019 to Rok Vevar

Rok Vevar works in the field of contemporary performing arts, and in the last two years he has especially upgraded his already fruitful authorial, research and critical work in the field of contemporary dance. Among his more notable achievements we must include his work within the editorial board of the magazine Maska, where with a subtle sense of constructive review criticism he actively shapes critical and theoretical thought on contemporary dance in Slovenia. In cooperation with the publishing house Maska, Nomad Dance Academy and JSKD, his long-awaited fundamental theatrological work was published in 2018, a collection of various texts on dance art Day, night + man = rhythm: Anthology of Slovenian contemporary dance journalism 1918–1960, where Vevar made a monumental research and editorial effort to adequately depict the state of mind in critical and theatrological thought of the first half of the 20th century.
