The Slovenian Theatre Institute

The Slovenian Theatre Institute (SLOGI) is a national public institution dedicated to preserving Slovenian theatre culture, collecting and documenting material from the field of theatre heritage and various forms of its presentation.

At the same time, it also takes care of the development and promotion of Slovenian theater culture and theater art of the widest genres: drama, opera, ballet and puppetry; contemporary dance, experimental, research and performative theater practices, physical, ambient and street theater and other forms.

Its mission and work method is to collect, document, preserve, research, study, interpret, present and promote Slovenian theater culture, theatre heritage and theatre art in Slovenia and internationally.

SLOGI is not just one of the Slovenian theater institutions, it is the anchor point of their mutual connection. In doing so, it opens new paths, especially in the field of presentation and popularization of Slovenian theater and its heritage, and as a connecting center it is also a bridge between the Slovenian theater of today and yesterday.

SLOGI operates in the old city center of Ljubljana, at Mestne trg 17, in the house where several famous Slovenians lived: baroque painter Fortunat Bergant, poet France Prešeren, poet, editor and librarian Miha Kastelic, poet, writer, playwright, publicist and translator Miran Jarc and violinist Tomaž Lorenz.

History of the institute and its activities

The Slovenian Theatre Institute (SLOGI) was founded on March 1, 2014. It is the legal successor of the Slovenian Theater Museum, founded on November 29, 1952. Its first director, Janko Traven, undertook an extensive collection of the difficult-to-examine amount of material, which until then had been kept unsystematized in the archives of Slovenian theatres and theatregoers in their homes.

In 1962, the management of the museum was taken over by Dušan Moravec, who founded the Dokumenti collection, a periodical publication that documents Slovenian theater history. On the occasion of the centenary of the founding of the Dramatic Society (1967), the Museum published an extensive theatrography Repertoar of Slovenian theaters 1867–1967.

In 1978, the film museum department of the Association of Slovenian Film Workers in Ljubljana joined the Slovenian Theatre Museum, so the museum was called the Slovenian Theatre and Film Museum from 1979. After 1990, it moved from Cankarjeva ulica 11 to much more suitable premises at Mestne trg 17. In 1996, the theater and film departments were separated, as the latter moved under its auspices when the Slovenska Kinoteka was founded, and from then until In 2014, it was again named the Slovenian Theatre Museum.

SLOGI today ‒ with incomparably more intensive and more diverse work than in the past ‒ is organizationally divided into an iconotheque, an archive of legacies, theater articles and electronic documentation, a video and audio archive, and a library. It places a strong emphasis on international cooperation and pedagogical activities.

Dissemination of information about the cultural heritage of Slovenian theatre

One of the central tasks of SLOGI is to provide information about Slovenian theatre heritage.

SLOGI – The Theatre Museum thus continuously prepares exhibitions where the professional and wider cultural public presents Slovenian theatre history, performances that have marked the Slovenian stage, as well as top Slovenian actors, singers and dancers as well as other theater creators (set designers, costume designers, directors, etc. ).

The museum also takes care of the accessibility of the material by publishing its collections on the world wide web and with their comprehensive presentations within the framework of e-exhibitions - we regularly publish them on the portals SiGledal.org and Museums.si.

In the SLOGI hall, we organize events related to the theory and practice of Slovenian theatre throughout the year. Theater experts, theatrologists, historians and critics discuss various segments of Slovenian and world theatre history in thematic discussions, round tables or symposia (see Events).

An important aspect of SLOGI's activity is publishing. The institute publishes a collection The Documents and periodical publication Slovene Theater Annual, and occasionally also monographic studies on Slovenian theater creators and theater groups, on individual periods and phenomena from Slovenian theater history, etc. Especially in recent years, we often cooperate with other publishers, such as the Academy of Radio, Film and Theater and Television, the National Gallery of Ljubljana or the Maska Institute (see Publishing).

In SLOGI, we significantly contribute to the recognition of Slovenian theater heritage in the European cultural space, especially by participating in international projects co-financed by the European Union (see International Cooperation).
