On the 400th anniversary of the birth of the great French comediographer
JEAN-BAPTISTE POQUELIN, better known under the name MOLIÈRE (15 January 1622-17 February 1673), aroused the interest of young intellectuals of Slovenian descent in the 19th century. The first staging of one of his plays in Slovene translation, the one-act play Les Précieuses ridicules, took place at the Provincial Theatre in Ljubljana on the 1st of January 1907. After 1918, the performances based on plays by Molière expanded considerably on Slovenian stages; already on the day after the end of the WW1, the staging of Le Malade imaginaire/The Imaginary Invalid premiered in Ljubljana. It is exactly this masterpiece - at the same time being Molière's final work - which has been presented on Slovenian professional theatre stages the most frequently. The Imaginary Invalid was even performed at the partisan stage during national resistance against Germans, which is an important event in the history of Slovenian theatre: on the 4th of November 1944 it was premiered by the Slovenian National Theatre on the liberated territory in Črnomelj, in costumes that were made of the allied aviators' parachutes.
On the occasion of the 400th anniversary of Molière's birth, we present costume sketches that were created by Leo Kulaš for the staging of The Imaginary Invalid at the Celje People's Theatre in 1992. Source.
