Dr. Matic Kocijančič:

Early Slovenian performances of Tennessee Williams

Tennessee Williams is, with almost thirty Slovenian productions of his works, one of the most frequently performed American playwrights on our stages. The first was staged Glass Menagerie, which was produced by the Ljubljana City Theatre in 1953 and directed by Bratko Kreft. In the same year, the Prešeren Theatre in Kranj also performed Tram Lust under the direction of Andrej Hieng. This was followed by numerous installations of his key works, such as Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Orpheus descendsIn the following decades, his works were often performed by both central Slovenian theaters and smaller theater houses.

Dr. Matic Kocijančič, curator and head of the archive collection of the Slovenian Theatre Institute, will present photographic and critical material in connection with early Slovenian performances of Williams' works.

The Slovenian Theatre Institute (SLOGI) and the SNG Drama Ljubljana continue with joint events in the cycle SLOGI and Drama, where performances are illuminated from the perspective of theatre history and placed in a broader artistic and social context before the premiere. The events offer an exclusive insight into the collections of SLOGI – Theatre Museum and encourage the audience to reflect on the themes and questions raised by selected dramatic works, their critical reception and performance history before watching individual performances. This lecture will also announce the performance Tram Lust Tennessee Williams, which will be directed by Nina Šorak Premiered on April 11, 2025, at 8 p.m. in Mala Drama at Litostrojska 56. Although the birth of the cult theater and film classic dates back to Tram Lust Set in the distant year 1947, the text still convinces with the complexity of human relationships and our time resonates in it with the themes of gender relations in a predominantly patriarchal society, class differences and a disappearing middle class. The drama illuminates the conflict between two worlds, real and fictional, today even more brutally than when it was first performed.
