A manuscript translation of a Czech play has been preserved in the archives of the Ljubljana Dramatic Society Eve, transcribed in the translator's handwriting. The bound volume (21 x 17 cm) without covers contains 96 leaves and the same number of numbered, listed pages (ref. DD 580). All information is on the cover (title, subtitle and authorship), but the translation begins with a list of persons and has no title page. At the end there are four unbound leaves: two pages contain the conclusion of the play. Although the pagination does not match (we skip from page 96 to pages 98 and 99), the text is preserved in its entirety.
Eve (original title is The boss's stuff) is a drama or tragedy by the Czech author Gabriela Preissová (1862-1946). The Ljubljana premiere was on 13 October 1904. The production was directed by Jaroslav Tišnov. They decided on the title A slave's wife, although in the manuscript the melodrama is titled after the main character, the seamstress Eva. The leaflet also lists the translator, Zofka Jelovškova (1878-1926), better known by her maiden name Kveder, the author of numerous short stories, plays and novels. Her life (1914). At the time she was translating the play, the translator Eve, lived in Prague.
Gabriela Preissova's most famous dramatic text is the play Her stepdaughter, which also served as a template for the opera Jenufa by the Czech composer Leoš Janaček. It was also performed in our country under the title Stepdaughter JenufaThe Ljubljana premiere was on November 29, 1924 (Gl. list of the National Theatre 1924/25, no. 6):
Like the drama about the illegitimate mother Jenufa, the play about the unfortunate seamstress was also a model for the libretto of the opera Eve by composer Josef Bohuslav Foerster. It was performed in Ljubljana a good twenty years later as a drama A slave's wifeIt was premiered on November 27, 1925 (Gl. list of the National Theatre 1925/26, no. 6):
