Jenufa, libretto

Gabriela Preissová: Jenufa. Translation: Fran Govekar.

The opera by the Czech composer Leoš Janáček (1854-1928) was first performed in Brno in 1904. The text is adapted from the play by Gabriela Preissova. The opera was also frequently performed in Slovenia, for the first time in the 1922/23 season, and the libretto was translated by Fran Govekar. The text of the opera was also printed (Collection of Opera and Operetta Texts, Ljubljana, 1922). The text was soon retranslated by Niko Štritof. We decided to publish Govekar's translation in a book edition for a special reason: the copy of the booklet from our library (sig. 2904) is the director's book by Ciril Debevec, which Jenufo directed several times. He wrote the year 1940 (his second directing Jenufa).
