This catalogue accompanies the travelling exhibition The History of Europe – as told by theatres. The exhibition is a joint product of six theatre museums within the framework of the European Route of Historical Theatres 2012-2017 project, supported by the Culture Programme of the European Union, without which the project would not have been possible.
In such collaborations, usually one of the museums takes the initiative with one curator developing the concept and selecting the exhibition objects. This was not the case with this project. This time, colleagues from all the museums met frequently and together developed the outline of the exhibition, proposed objects, discussed them and selected them together. Later, the designers were selected and their ideas were also judged in the group. The exhibition is thus the result of more than two years of continuous teamwork between six museums. A very unusual undertaking, but one that was a great pleasure to direct.
The catalogue addresses the nine themes of the exhibition and offers a more detailed look at selected themes. However, this is not just an exhibition catalogue, as it highlights only individual exhibits and the texts in it are more extensive than those included in the exhibition. We hope to offer visitors and readers an invigorating experience. Carsten Jung, project manager
