In his treatise, dramaturg and theatre scholar Primož Jesenko describes and documents twenty years of Slovenian theatre in the most precise way possible, not only theatre, but also the spiritual climate of Slovenian society on the path from realism to self-managing socialism – up to the emergence of anarcho-liberalism in the late 1960s. Jesenko proves that dramaturgy is not just a doctrine of drama and dramatic art, but that, especially in the period under consideration, it played an extremely important role in shaping Slovenian theatre, which is precisely the merit of Herbert Grün, Lojze Filipič and Bojan Štih.

The playwright, as a "man in the shadows" in Jesenko's study, comes to the fore and becomes a personality "around whom all the forces of (theatrical) time gather" (Denis Poniž).
