International Symposium The Art of Kamishibai. The Word of the Image and the Image of the Word

Kamishibai is storytelling with pictures on a small wooden stage (butai). The name itself suggests that it is a Japanese theatrical form: kami means paper in Japanese and shibai means theatre, drama. A typical (Japanese) Japanese kamishibai has a different number of pictures: simple kamishibai for children may have only five or seven, but usually kamishibai have 12 to 16 pictures. These, similar to comics, are shown to the audience one after the other during the story. It is important that the pictures show the most important and interesting parts of the story as imaginatively as possible.

Between May 10 and 12, 2018, the Slovenian Theatre Institute (SLOGI), the Zapik Society and the Kamishibaj Society of Slovenia, in collaboration with the Faculty of Education of the University of Primorska, the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television of the University of Ljubljana, the Department of Asian Studies of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ljubljana and the Embassy of Japan in Slovenia, are preparing the international symposium The Art of Kamishibaj, Word of Image and Image of Word.

The symposium will focus on the phenomenon of kamishibai theatre, which, in the era of digitalisation and globalisation, enables authentic communication and the possibility of realising artistic freedom in direct confrontation with the spectator. In the modern, globalised and digitalised world, kamishibai offers the possibility of interesting analogue, creative, artistic and interpersonal communication. As an original Japanese art form, kamishibai is given different interpretations in terms of content and form in different cultures. Its minimalist and syncretic form also raises numerous questions – not only for creators, but also for experts and researchers from various fields. The symposium is the central event of SLOGI in the European Year of Cultural Heritage and establishes a dialogue between different cultures and interpretations of cultural heritage.
