Museums are dynamic educational centers that encourage curiosity, creativity and critical thinking. As part of International Museum Day, which is celebrated every year on May 18, we want to invite the public to think about education in the future.
This year's theme of International Museum Day Museums for education and research, organized by the International Council of Museums ICOM, emphasizes the importance of museums as dynamic educational institutions that promote learning to discover and understand different cultures. Museums ensure the exchange and enrichment of cultures, strengthen mutual understanding, cooperation and peace between nations.
The Slovenian State Museums have prepared a joint billboard exhibition, which will be on display in front of the SEM Cafe at the Slovenian Ethnographic Museum in Ljubljana, where each museum presents itself with its current programs and contents, which focus on education and research.
This time he addresses us with his opening speech Nataša Robežnik, acting director of the Museum of Recent and Contemporary History of Slovenia:
"Modern museums are institutions that work for the benefit of society, research, collect, conserve, interpret and exhibit tangible and intangible heritage. Museums are open to the public, accessible and inclusive, promoting diversity and sustainable development. They work in collaboration with communities, enabling diverse experiences, creativity and critical thinking.
On this year's International Museum Day, the role of museums in the field of education and research is particularly emphasized.
With the active involvement of the audience, museums have become a place for cooperation and co-creation of knowledge. Museum experiences are shaped through the interaction between visitors and museum content, allowing visitors to be active creators of their experiences.
Museums offer diverse and flexible educational programs, as each visitor enters the museum with their own personal experiences, knowledge and expectations. Guided tours, interactive content, workshops, lectures, virtual tours or other forms of activity are available to visitors, allowing them to choose the ones that are most suitable for them.
Museums also offer a cultural exchange that enriches modern society with knowledge and experience. They are places of dialogue and intercultural understanding and places where different views, traditions and identities meet. In doing so, they contribute to the creation of more inclusive and tolerant communities.
Some museums also act as research centers where cultural heritage is studied and studied. Slovenian museum experts participate in scientific research, discover new facts and make a significant contribution to the understanding of heritage.
In short, modern museums are dynamic centers of education, research and cultural dialogue that provide a holistic educational experience for different target groups. You are invited to visit the museums and learn from the past for the present."
