On the program of the 58th Borštnik's Meeting Festival
Story The servant Jernej and his right is the most translated work by Ivan Cankar, which testifies to its universality, relevance and international recognition. The Servant Jernej has also inspired – and continues to inspire – numerous adaptations for theatre, opera, choral music, radio, film, television, and more recently, comics. The exhibition of the Slovenian Theatre Institute, conceived by Dr. Aldo Milohnić (OJ AGRFT) and Tea Rogelj, MA (SLOGI), focuses on the most important dramatizations of this story: the first was written over a hundred years ago (1922) by the versatile theatre creator Milan Skrbinšek (it premiered at the Maribor Theatre, where it was later staged three more times), and the second by the avant-garde artist Ferdo Delak approximately ninety years ago (1932). Selected materials from the collections of the Slovenian Theatre Institute – Theatre Museum are on display, such as typescripts and book editions of dramatizations, stage sketches, projections sketches, leaflets, theatre lists, photographs of performances, etc., which accompanied numerous productions of Skrbinšek's and Delak's adaptations of The Servant Jernej.
A book by Aldo Milohnić was also recently published. I worked for 40 years: dramatizations and adaptations of Cankar's The Servant Jernej (SLOGI in collaboration with UL AGRFT), which was created based on the author's fundamental research into previous adaptations of Hlapec Jernej for theatre, radio, film, television and comics.
