Trieste National Hall in flames

Postcard/colored photograph, 12.2 x 16 cm, source: Icon Library SLOGI – Theatre Museum.

We present to you the collections of SLOGI – Theatre Museum. In July 2020, on the 100th anniversary of the arson of the National Hall in Trieste, we present a postcard/colored photograph of the Trieste National Hall in Flames.

One hundred years ago, on July 13, 1920, Italian fascists, with the support of the military authorities – firefighters were not allowed to put out the fire – burned down the Slovenian National Hall in Trieste. The symbolic significance of the event deeply shocked the Slovenians of Trieste and the Slovenian minority in general.

The photograph with the motif of the National Hall in flames is from the legacy of theater actor, director, organizer and educator Hinko Nučič (1883-1970).
