We are presenting our our collections. In April 2020 we are presenting a photography of Rudolf Francl as Florestan in Ludwig van Beethoven’s Fidelio. Performance from the 1947/48 season, premiered April 3, 1948, directed by Ciril Debevec, conducted by Mirko Polič.

Rudolf Francl had a lyrical tenor of noble color, highly musical and with a sense of musical phrase. In his time he was one of the most popular singers on the stage of the Ljubljana opera house and one of the greatest tenors in the history of Slovenian opera in general. He sang practically the entire tenor opera repertoire. In 1948, he received the Prešeren’s Prize and the Yugoslav Federal Prize for his role as Cavaradossi in Puccini’s Tosca. After his period in Ljubljana he was a member of the Belgrade Opera (1952) then a member of the Zagreb Opera for three and the Düsseldorf Opera for seven seasons (1956–1963. In between, he won the first prize at the Verviers Singing Competition in 1957. He had guest-starred also at other German opera house – in Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne and Stuttgart – and had performed in Moscow, Tallinn, Riga, St. Peterburg and Japan.
