In 1982, ICOMOS, the International Council on Monuments and Sites, pronounced 18 April as the day dedicated to monuments and heritage sites; a year later it was approved by the General Conference of UNESCO.
This year, the Slovenian Theatre Institute – Theatre Museum joins the celebration of this day with the publication of a photograph showing the construction of the Ljubljana Drama. The building has been listed as a national cultural monument with characteristics of an architectural monument. It was built in 1911, as designed by the Viennese architect Alexander Graf, formerly a member of the renowned architectural studio Fellner & Helmer. The opening of the German Theatre, or the Emperor Franz Joseph Jubilee Theatre was on 4 October that same year. Since 6 February 1919, Slovene spoken performances have been staged in the building.
In the period between 2008 and 2010, the National Theatre Museum of Slovenia cooperated with theatre institutes and museums from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia as part of the Culture 2000 programme. We prepared the joint project TACE – Theater Architecture in Central Europe and in this way explored the cultural heritage of theatre buildings.
