Emilia Galotti

Gotthold Ephraim Lessing: Emilia Galotti. Translation by Filip Kumbatovič Kalan.

Here is a typescript of the translation Emilie Galotti, Lessing's tragedies in five acts. The work was translated by Filip Kumbatovič Kalan (1910 – 1989), architect, writer, theatre scholar and university professor, lecturer in theatre history at the AGRFT.

The Slovenian Lexicon of Recent Translation (1985), compiled by Janko Moder, states that the translation was created in 1950 for study purposes at the AGRFT. Kumbatović's translation was never performed on professional stages or printed. Only this typescript and a copy of the typescript with corrections, which are taken into account in the version selected for publication online, have survived. The cover shows that it is a director's book: apparently, the tragedy was intended to be performed at the Ljubljana Drama Theater, but it never came to fruition. Lessing's dramatic text was only performed in the 2018/19 season in the translation by Mojca Kranjc.

Filip Kumbatovič translated from German, French, Italian and English. In his youth he translated Weininger's Gender and character (1936) and Maurois Periods in love (1937), and later he translated dramatic texts, including Ibsen's (Norman heroes) and Salacrouj (Just like everyone else).
