A conversation with this year's Borštnik ring recipient, Jette Ostan Vejrup

After the end of the Borštnik Festival, the Slovenian Theater Institute invites you to watch a conversation we recorded with another great actor. recipient of Borštnik's Ring 2021. Z actress Jetta Ostan Vejrup we talked a few days before the end of this year's edition of the festival, which concluded with the traditional presentation of the Borštnik Awards on Sunday, June 27.

In the justification of the highest acting award for lifetime achievement in our country, the following is written about the actress, whose professional path from Denmark via Paris and international stages brought her to Slovenia: : with human warmth and elusive complexity, with acting perfectionism intertwined with the pain of self-irony and infectious relaxed humor, with experience foreigners in what everyone else might think homemade or self-evident, enriched the Slovenian theater landscape with new stage experiences, while offering the Slovenian viewer the possibility of comparison, expanding the boundaries of the known world and widening the space for dialogue, which is actually the starting creative impulse of theater art."

Jette Ostan Vejrup experienced her first professional recognition in Slovenia during her first acting performance on the Slovenian stage in a play Railway information Petar Handke, which was created at the Glej Experimental Theater in 1989; the author's team, consisting of director Nevenka Koprivšek and actor Boris Ostan, received Borštnik's diploma for special achievements. Borštnik's acting award soon followed, namely in 1990 for the title role in Yvonne, Princess of Burgundy by Witold Gombrowicz (directed by Jonathan Paul Cook). The performance was created in the production of the City Theater of Ljubljana (MGL), where after a decade and a half of working "in freedom", i.e. collaborating with various institutional and non-institutional theaters, she got a job in 2004 and created many, including award-winning, roles there. She won the Borštnik Award for acting again in 2007 for Fräulein Schneider in the musical Cabaret Joe Masteroff, John Kander and Fred Ebb (dir. Stanislav Moša) and in 2015 for the role of Hera in Homer's The Iliads (dir. Jernej Lorenci, co-production of MGL, SNG Drama Ljubljana and Cankarjev dom).

Along with Borštnik's awards, Jette Ostan Vejrup received two more golden sticks - in 1998 for the roles of Mirror and Fool in the play Snow White Brothers Grimm and Janez Venclja (directed by Barbara Hieng Samobor, produced by the Prešeren Theater in Kranj) and in 2005 for the authorship and performance of an actor's monologue The ugly duckling based on the motifs of Hans Christian Andersen (co-production Bunker and Cankarjev dom) -, two Dnevnik awards for outstanding artistic achievement on the MGL stage - in 2011 for the title role in the production Harper Regan Simon Stephens (dir. Boris Ostan) and in 2018 for the roles of Hippolyta v Midsummer Night's Dream, author's project based on Shakespeare's play (dir. Jernej Lorenci), Levive in the drama Life as work Hanoh Levin (dir. Andrej Jus) and Birgitte Mrak in the crime series Memory void Barbara Zemljič (dir. Nina Šorak) - and in 2020 the award from the Stanet Sever Foundation for the roles she created at MGL in the last two years: Klitajmestre in To this unfortunate generation Zinnie Harris (dir. Ivana Djilas), Mrs. Imelda in a production I'm like you, I like apples Theresie Walser (dir. Boris Ostan) and for several roles in the omnibus Seven days Katarina Morano and Žiga Divjak, also the director of the performance and scientific cabaret 2020 based on the motifs of Noah Yuval Harari (dir. Ivica Buljan, co-production of MGL, SNG Drama Ljubljana and Cankarjev dom).

In justifying Sever's award, the jury wrote, among other things: "Her stage appearance is characterized by complete presence, self-reflection and a specific, unique performative attitude. Jette Ostan Vejrup brings full-bloodedness and fleshiness to the roles, arising from solid acting reflection and self-questioning, as if it is a constant vital struggle between inspiration and doubt, familiar and risky, domestic and foreign."
