Rostand's Cyrano on Slovenian professional stages

Rostandov Cyrano on Slovenian professional stages

When the game was on Cyrano de Bergerac performed for the first time in front of an audience, it received incredible enthusiasm: the hall of the Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin in Paris practically exploded from the cheers - which Edmond Rostand, the author of this "heroic comedy", must not have foreseen, since the atmosphere at the rehearsals was as encouraging and therefore he was afraid of polomia. The success of The General was confirmed the following evening, on the day of the premiere, December 28, 1897, by an equally enthusiastic response from the audience.

The first performer of the title role was Coquelin Sr., a theater star of the time; later, Cyrano was played by other big names. Also on Slovenian professional stages, where the play was first staged in 1924; it was staged in Ljubljana Drama by director Boris Putjata, who persuaded Oton Župančič to translate Rostand's play. As noted by Boris A. Novak, the result was "a congenial translation that masterfully conveys the witty, poetic and dramatically tense original" and which "will remain recorded in the history of Slovenian translation and theater art as one of the highest achievements."

However, the first performance does not mean discovery Cyrano in Slovenia. Janko Traven states that it was staged at the German Theater in Ljubljana in 1903, Friderik Juvančič dealt with Rostand and his drama in an essay published in 1910, the play also appeared in the tentative repertoire of the Regional Theatre...

The performance, in which the director Putjata took the title role, failed. But the hope expressed by Fran Albrecht in the criticism that Cyrano "in a suitable cast, it shows in its true light in the foreseeable future", it came true. In 1928, Rostand's hero was portrayed by Ivan Levar in a new production, who connected with the role to such an extent that he celebrated the 25th anniversary of his artistic work with it in 1937.

After three Ljubljana installations, it happened Cyrano started the Maribor theater and opened the 1940/41 season with it, while the Ljubljana Drama opened the 1954/55 season with a re-enactment of the play. Later, the story of the Long-bearer was performed in the Mladin Theater (1975), the Primorska Drama Theater (1988), the Ljubljana City Theater (2001) and, as a variation, the Maribor Puppet Theater (2013).

You are invited to a historical flight of Slovenian theatrical encounters with Rostandov To Cyrano, prepared by a theater expert and curator Ana Perne.
