Play areas, holiday childcare

For a week, we will become scenographers – planners and designers of theatre performances. The common thread of the holiday workshops will be the search for connections between different types of art, as we will draw inspiration throughout the week from the works of art found in the National Gallery. These will serve as the basis for creating our own stories and theatre improvisations. Each day will be dedicated to one theatre element, and on the last day we will combine everything we learn during the week into a short theatre production.

Programme

Monday: Exploring the scenography at the exhibition Space within space: Scenography in Slovenia until 1991

Behind every stage design lies a story – the story of an artist or a stylistic period, the story from the first idea to its realization and, last but not least, the story that takes place on stage. At the exhibition, we will creatively explore stage designs and bring them to life through theatrical play. We will learn about genres, create our own stories and soundscapes using the stage designs, and learn in a dynamic way how play has changed throughout history as scenography has changed. We will also recreate stage designs or mock-ups using various techniques. Each participant will create their own 2D or 3D stage design.

Tuesday: Exploring theatrical play in space

Each space offers its own dynamics and we can draw different inspiration from each space. With the participants, we will explore the gallery spaces and explore hidden corners. Through improvisational exercises, we will discover what each space tells us, we will also look for inspiration in the exhibited works of art and the stories they tell us. We will pay special attention to portraits, as they will help us build characters. In the second part, we will create our own theatrical characters with the participants. Each participant will create their own, draw them, name them, and assign them characteristics. Finally, with the help of improvisational theater, we will get to know all the created characters more closely.

Wednesday: Exploring theater masks

Participants will discover the roots of theater as we know it today, learn where and how plays were performed in Greek theater, and learn about ancient theater masks. Then we will stop at Comedies of the Art and explore typical masks and their properties with the participants. We will also create colorful theatrical masks ourselves and find out how playing with a mask differs from playing without one.

Thursday: Costume Exploration

At the workshop, we will first go to the gallery, where we will see how clothes have changed over time with the help of pictures, and then we will focus on theater costumes. We must not forget that a costume is also just a piece of clothing, which actually comes to life only with the play. So at the workshop, we will revive costumes and give them new meaning through play, before we try our hand at the role of costume designers ourselves. We will not only plan and make costumes, but we will also try them out ourselves. The workshop will end with short acting scenes, where participants will learn how a costume affects the construction of a scene, the formation of a character, how a costume can also be used as part of a scene, and what costumes tell us.

Friday: Theatre as a Whole

On Friday, we will walk through the entire workshop process and remember what we need for the performance. Together, we will create the missing stage elements that we will use in the production. We will choose the costumes and masks that we will use. Together, we will prepare the script, distribute the roles, and create a performance that will draw content from the stories drawn by the artworks exhibited in the National Gallery. Participants will end the week with a short theater production. Of course, we will also invite parents to watch!
