After her study years in Vienna, the theatre director, artistic leader and pedagogue Balbina Battelino Baranovič followed the initiative of Branko Gavella and enrolled at the Academy of Acting Arts in Ljubljana. In 1955, she founded the Experimental Theatre (being the pioneer in Yugoslavia) in the Knight’s Hall of Križanke, as well as the Youth Theatre, both functioned in parallel. She introduced stage organisation of the »theatre in the round« and presented works of selected authors with professional actors. Her affinity for trespassing the convention stimulated further theatre evolution (loosening of the actorial presence on stage, inclusion of choreographed movement etc.). The experimental (self)identification was her existential identity.
