Karel Čapek: The White Disease
In the year of 1937, which marks the time of the rise of Nazism, Karel Čapek wrote his drama The White Disease. After its opening presentation in Prague, the work was soon staged at the National Theatres in Maribor and in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
With its visionary display of a pandemic initiated by a virus from China and causes passing of the old population, The White Disease reflects a mirror image of the human self-extinction: the rise of a militant state, fascism, an intense drive to armament, the fatal support of science and politics, helplessness of the individual.
The contemporary reader can get amazed by the used terms as quarantine, isolation, the Peking leprosy. At the same time, it is not possible to stay indifferent at the displayed emergence of a fascist dictator, the armour industry’s advocates and the devastating rampage of the primitive mob.
