Dušan Jovanović (1939–2021) is one of the most important, perhaps even the most important creators of Slovenian theatre in the last half century. His contribution to the modernisation of theatre art in Slovenia is decisive; as are his contributions to the high fitness, semantic and artistic relevance of the entire field of performing arts in our country. His creative oeuvre is extensive, complex and extremely diverse, as he implemented it in various roles, always pursuing his authorial focus and high professionalism. He was a director of the largest format: from avant-garde beginnings in the Student Current Theatre, the Pupilije Ferkeverk Theatre and the Experimental Theatre Glej, which he co-founded and led, to mature, often magnificent, even groundbreaking productions in almost all Slovenian theatres, often also in the area of the former Yugoslavia. In these, he distinguished himself with his original and committed staging of classics, both foreign and domestic, as well as with his theatrical discovery of contemporary texts. Important are his first performances of contemporary Slovenian authors, whom he often encouraged to write for the theatre, and his stagings of his own works. In total, he directed around one hundred and thirty different projects. He was a playwright with an extensive and diverse oeuvre, which includes absurdist and ludic plays as well as socially critical and intimate dramas and dramatizations, TV and radio plays, and film scripts. He was a prominent artistic director who played a decisive role in the rise and development of the Youth Theatre, thereby transforming the Slovenian theatre landscape; he was also a co-founder of the then important Yugoslav association KPGT. He was a writer, especially a poet in his later years, and a consistently insightful essayist and publicist. He wrote for various newspapers and magazines and published several books of essays; In the early 1990s, he and his colleagues conceived an ambitious (unfortunately short-lived) project for the international magazine Euromaske. He participated in important international associations (Bonner Biennale) and in numerous festivals and conferences internationally. He was also a professor who made an encouraging impression on his students and pupils at AGRFT, workshops abroad (USA, France) and at drama writing workshops in our country. In every respect, a great creator and the driving force of Slovenian theatre.
