SLOGI Iconotheque – Theatre Museum

The theatre actress Zofija Borštnik Zvonarjeva was born 150 years ago. She debuted in 1882, at the age of 14, on the stage of the Ljubljana Reading Room. She was later active as actress in Zagreb and in Ljubljana, but performed also in Sofia, Belgrade, Osijek and elsewhere (as she was used to using Slovenian, Serbo-Croat, German and Bulgarian languages). In her career, she created more than 300 roles and was renowned as one of the most remarkable Slovenian theatre artists. In the photo Zofija Borštnik Zvonar can be seen in the leading role of The Lady with the Camellias (Camille) by Alexandre Dumas fils, Sofia, 1905. On the photo’s backpage she wrote: “I performed in this role in three languages.”
