Shortly after the war, in <em>The Ljubljana Bell<\/em> excerpt from <em>Oedipus the King<\/em> translated by Anton Sovr\u00e8t. This was Sovr\u00e8t&#039;s first published translation from ancient literature, and he published the entire tragedy a year later (Ljubljana, Nova zalo\u017eba, 1922).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slogi.si\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Edip-kralj-Sovre-1922-page-001.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-23986\" src=\"https:\/\/www.slogi.si\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Edip-kralj-Sovre-1922-page-001-204x300-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"204\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The next translator of Sophocles was Fran Albrecht, who translated his three tragedies, <em>Oedipus the King<\/em>, <em>Antigone<\/em> and <em>Electro<\/em>, translated from adaptations by Hugo von Hofmannsthal. His translation <em>Oedipus the King<\/em> was staged in Ljubljana&#039;s Drama Theatre in 1935, and Albrecht also published in the theatre&#039;s newspaper the principles that guided him in translating and selecting \u00bb<em>Hofmannsthal&#039;s transliterations<\/em>\u00ab:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slogi.si\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Edip-kralj-gl.-list-1935-page-001.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-23988\" src=\"https:\/\/www.slogi.si\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Edip-kralj-gl.-list-1935-page-001-300x226-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Translation for Slovenian baptismal performance <em>Antigone<\/em> was prepared by the writer Cvetko Golar in 1912. His translation was not published until 1924 under the title <em>Antigone<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slogi.si\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Edip-kralj-Golar-page-001.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-23990\" src=\"https:\/\/www.slogi.si\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Edip-kralj-Golar-page-001-213x300-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"213\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Albrecht&#039;s <em>Antigone<\/em> were staged in 1939, both tragedies, <em>Oedipus the King<\/em> and <em>Antigone<\/em>, were published in a joint book edition. Albrecht&#039;s translations of both tragedies were published as the second book in the new collection of the Slovenska matica Vezana beseda. Before and after <em>King Oedipus<\/em> two Shakespeare plays were printed as the first and third books of this collection, <em>Romeo and Juliet<\/em> and <em>Storm<\/em>. The introduction to Albrecht&#039;s translation was written by Jo\u017ea Glonar. The book was published just before the attack on Yugoslavia and may even be the last book published in Ljubljana before the Italian occupation, but it is certainly among the last, because the colophon states that it was bound in February and March 1941. In 1950, Albrecht&#039;s translation of Goethe&#039;s The <em>Iphigenia in Tauris<\/em>, and between one and the other printed translations in the collection Vezana beseda, Fran Albreht lived through probably the most dramatic decade of his life: first he joined the anti-fascist movement, was deported to Dachau in 1944, and after returning from the concentration camp, became the first post-war mayor of Ljubljana for three years.<\/p>\n<p>The Crossword is still in print and was the last book in the series to be printed. <em>Antigone<\/em>, this time by Anouilh (2019, Slovenska matica, Vezana beseda; 32, translated by Ale\u0161 Berger).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slogi.si\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Edip-kralj-Anouilh-page-001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-23992\" src=\"https:\/\/www.slogi.si\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Edip-kralj-Anouilh-page-001-186x300-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"186\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the period between the two wars, Anton Sovr\u00e8 established himself as an authority in the field of translating Greek tragedies into Slovenian. Three years after the publication of Albrecht&#039;s translations of Sophocles, during World War II, Sovr\u00e8 published a new translation of the tragedy under the title <em>King Oedipus<\/em> (1944, Mohor&#039;s Society, Flowers from Domestic and Foreign Languages, World Literature; 2).<\/p>\n<p>In fifteen years, <em>Oedipus the King<\/em> republished in the Kondor collection, which was intended for the increasingly numerous generations of school-going youth, so that from this edition onwards the tragedy was periodically published in the aforementioned book collection (1959, Mladinska knjiga, Knji\u017enica Kondor; 22).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slogi.si\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Edip-kralj-Kondor-1959-page-001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-23994\" src=\"https:\/\/www.slogi.si\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Edip-kralj-Kondor-1959-page-001-218x300-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"218\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sovr\u00e8t&#039;s translation was also published in 1962. <em>Antigone<\/em> (tragedies <em>Antigone<\/em>, <em>King Oedipus<\/em>, <em>Oedipus at Colonus<\/em> and <em>Philoctetes <\/em>in one book, CBS).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slogi.si\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Edip-kralj-DZS-page-001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-23996\" src=\"https:\/\/www.slogi.si\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Edip-kralj-DZS-page-001-192x300-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"192\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The next translator, who translated both tragedies, among other ancient dramas, was Cajetan Gantar.
