This year's International Museum Day is dedicated to the theme Museums for Equality: Diversity and Inclusion. Slovenian museums celebrate it digitally this year, with a joint virtual booklet. Slovenian Theater Institute – Theater Museum joins the virtual booklet with a presentation of the remains kept in our museum from the site of the Narodni dom in Trieste, which was burned down by Italian fascists a hundred years ago, on 13 July 1920.
REMAINS OF THE EXTINCT COEXISTENCE
Hundred years ago, on 13 July 1920, the Italian fascists, with the assistance of Italian army troupes – the fire brigade was not allowed to intervene – burned the Slovenian Narodni dom (the National Hall) in Trieste (Slovenian name: Triest) to the ground. Narodni dom represented the center of the Slovenian national core in Trieste.
A mere glance at the place of this vile attack and the remains of the Slovenian national domicile allowed numerous Slovenian inhabitants of Trieste to sense the aggressive rampage clearly. The scarce remains of the building were preserved with respect, one evidence of this being the exhibited box which is taken care of at the Slovenian Theater Institute – Theater Museum.
The item is accompanied with the sign: »Statue is a gift of Anica Martelanc, the daughter of a builder of Narodni dom in Trieste. She found it in the ashes after the building of Narodni dom was grounded in flames. The plate, fork and spoon, originating from the restaurant of the Balkan Hotel, were found by Anton Požar, a member of the Dramatic Society.”
Anton Požar, a member of the Dramatic Society, had presented the artefact to the actor Rado Nakrst in 1956, Nakrst handed it over to the Slovene Permanent Theater in Trieste in 1970. Since 1989, it has been preserved at the Slovenian Theater Institute – Theater Museum.
