From our Collections – Bojan Stupica (1910–1970) as Macheath

We are presenting our collections. In May 2020 we are presenting a photography of Bojan Stupica in the role of Macheath, the notorious gang chief in The Threepenny Opera (orig. The Threepenny Opera) by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, in the first staging of Brecht in Slovenia (National Theater Ljubljana, premiere 30 September 1937). Moreover, Stupica directed it and created its set design.

May 2020 marks half a century since the passing of the director and actor Bojan Stupica. His theater persona was originally dedicated to architecture and placed his directorial performances in original theater spaces. His creative restlessness did not leave traces only in Slovenian theater history, the nomad activity and artistic presence of Stupica significantly marked the theater of the former mutual country Yugoslavia and beyond. After WW2, he was the first director of the Slovenian National Drama Theater in Ljubljana. Already on the occasion of one of his directorial stagings during the war years he was very clear: "I never strived to fulfill the needs of a mediocre taste. Well, this is not my playground! My work is done to serve the pure essence of theatre, with devotion and eagerness!"
